Thank you for taking the time to read this. I have received a letter from Marstons saying I owe £500 for an unpaid bus lane fine dating back to March 2015. The client is Lambeth Council. This is the first ever letter I have received concerning this. I looked in my diary and I was definitely in that area on that day but have not received one letter from Lambeth. This could be due to the fact that I have recently moved and updated my vehicle log book.
I rang the bailiff agent and explained the above and he said he deals with these sort of debts all the time because people don't update their vehicle log books. I have moved 3 times in the last 4 years and I think the offence occurred when DVLA were in the process of updating my log book during one of my moves so all of the letters from Lambeth were going to an old address.
I did ask the agent to provide some sort evidence that previous correspondence was going to a different address but said his only job is to recover the money.
I would have paid the fine immediately had I known about it.
Is there anything I can do to avoid giving this man £500??
Any help would be much appreciated.

Not a solicitor. I am a paralegal for solicitors bringing proceedings against non-compliant enforcement action.
